Chapter 2
The world in his dreams was identical to the one he currently found himself in.
There was no Insect Star, no male and female insects; only a species called humans, divided into three genders: men, women, and gers.
Men were tall and robust, responsible for providing for the family, while women were tasked with childbirth and raising children.
gers, situated between the two, had the appearance of men but bore a mole on their foreheads, allowing them to become pregnant and give birth. However, due to a lower birth rate compared to women, their status was not as high. Only gers with delicate features and beauty comparable to women were highly valued.
However, in this world, technology was extremely backward, and everything was still in the agricultural era. Many people struggled to have enough to eat, let alone afford to marry women.
Therefore, many poor families without much money would marry a ger who wasn’t conventionally attractive to be their male spouse.
He became a ger named Bai Shu, the only son of the Bai family’s eldest, and he had been raised with great care since childhood.
After the elder Bai divided the family, there was still some family wealth in Baotang Village. Since there was only Bai Shu as the successor, he was sent to the village school to study and learn how to write.
Bai Shu was naturally smart, with a fair and handsome appearance. Before he was even twelve years old, the Li family from the west of the village came to propose a marriage, hoping that their third son would marry Bai Shu when he grew up.
The elder Bai, seeing that Li Sanlang was also studying at the village school and looked neat and tidy, agreed after considering for a while.
They made an oral agreement with the Li family, and it was agreed that when Bai Shu turned eighteen, they would come to formalize the engagement.
The elder Bai had already planned it out. When Bai Shu was to get married, he would offer ten acres of land as dowry.
With this land, Bai Shu would have a comfortable life, free from worries about food and clothing for the rest of his life.
Unfortunately, unexpected events occurred. A plague struck, and the previously healthy elder Bai and his wife fell ill one after another.
Elder Bai sold off a significant portion of his land, using all the proceeds to buy medicine. Despite consuming expensive medicines and spending all their savings, Elder Bai and his wife couldn’t survive the ordeal.
In the end, they left Bai Shu and his elderly mother behind.
After Elder Bai’s death, Bai Lao San, who hadn’t been in contact for many years, showed up, claiming to be there to take care of the elderly mother.
In front of the village chief, they took the remaining few acres of land left by Elder Bai, occupied the Bai family’s house, and promised to care for the elderly mother until Bai Shu got married.
From then on, Bai Shu began living as a dependent. He stopped attending the village school, and every day he had to work in the fields doing farm chores.
In less than half a year, the once delicate young ger had transformed into someone rugged, nearly as rough as the local men in the village.
When his mother passed away, Bai Lao San became even more ruthless. He directly kicked Bai Shu out of their original house, making him stay in the adjacent storage room. If he didn’t work, he wouldn’t get any food.
If it weren’t for the thought that he could marry Li Sanlang once he turned eighteen and escape this wolf’s den, Bai Shu would have given up a long time ago.
However, this last hope of Bai Shu was shattered when Li Sanlang passed the imperial examination. Li Sanlang, now a scholar, no longer found any interest in Bai Shu, who was penniless and without a future.
The Li family still proposed a marriage alliance with the Bai family, but the intended groom changed to Bai Lao San’s son, Bai He.
Bai He, too, was a ger, with delicate features. Being the youngest in the family, he received a lot of love and attention from his parents.
Upon learning that Bai He had taken over the engagement, Bai Shu was furious and trembling with anger. He wanted to confront Bai Lao San and demand an explanation.
However, being an honest person who rarely spoke harsh words, he could only express his anger with a series of “You shameless,” “You despicable,” and “You’ve gone too far.” Unfortunately, these accusations were ineffective and only resulted in Bai Lao San’s family hurling vulgar insults back at him.
Distressed and humiliated, Bai Shu fell ill in that rundown room, never to get up again.
Bai Shu woke up from the dream, and as he touched his face, he indeed felt a mole right in the center of his forehead.
Struck by a photon cannon, he had actually awakened in the body of Bai Shu. It seemed that the dream he just had belonged to Bai Shu’s past.
The tears on his face from before had dried up. Bai Shu knew that these weren’t his emotions; they belonged to Bai Shu.
After he fainted earlier, the Bai Shu inside his body had completely disappeared.
Bai Shu felt a bit heavy-hearted, recalling everything he dreamed about and sympathizing with Bai Shu’s situation.
However, from his perspective as an insectoid, ultimately, Bai Shu was too weak. Despite the mistreatment from Bai Lao San, Bai Shu didn’t resist but instead waited for someone else to come to his rescue. Bai Shu didn’t even seem to like Li Sanlang very much, yet he hoped to rely on Li Sanlang to escape his predicament.
Bai Shu thought it might be better to empower himself, make a name for himself, and actively pursue the man he liked.
As his stomach grumbled with hunger, Bai Shu’s thoughts turned to more immediate concerns.
He was really too hungry. Supporting himself, Bai Shu crawled to the door from the ground. In any case, he had to quickly find some food; otherwise, after gaining Bai Shu’s body, he would starve to death.
Bai Shu had been unconscious for several hours. When he crawled out of the yard, the sun was already leaning westward—it was the afternoon.
The yard was eerily quiet, with no one in sight. Bai Shu entered the kitchen, but he couldn’t find a single grain of rice.
Relying on a faint memory, Bai Shu realized that Bai Lao San’s wife, Bai Zoushi, must have hidden the food to prevent him from stealing.
“Damn it!” he couldn’t help but curse and, dragging his weakened steps, walked out of the yard.
Baotang Village had no merchants, and Bai Shu had no money. He didn’t know where to find something to eat. Despite being skilled in hunting, Bai Shu’s body was now too weak due to Bai Shu’s starvation; he had no strength left.
After walking for a while, Bai Shu reached the official road in the village. Dizzy and sweating profusely under the sun, he couldn’t distinguish the distant carriage and saw it as a blur.
With a snap, Bai Shu fell to the ground, and dust scattered around him.
The carriage gradually approached and stopped in front of him. He heard a pleasant male voice saying, “Xiao Shu, go and see what’s on the ground.”
“Yes, young master,” replied a young voice.
Bai Shu tried to lift his head to take a look but realized he had no strength left. The footsteps approached, and a pair of cloth shoes stopped in front of him.
Bai Shu was turned over, and a young boy with a baby face, about fourteen or fifteen years old, appeared before him.
The young man glanced at him, somewhat disdainfully asking, “Hey, who are you? Why are you lying on the official road?”
“Hungry… hungry…” Bai Shu, devoid of strength, managed to squeeze out just one word repeatedly.
The young man turned back and shouted towards the direction of the carriage, “Young master, it’s a ger. Looks like he collapsed from hunger.”
Bai Shu heard the curtain of the carriage being lifted, and footsteps approached. Before long, a pair of black boots stopped in front of him.
The owner of the boots was tall and graceful, dressed in a simple blue garment. His nose was well-defined, with slanting eyebrows. His skin was as fair as jade, and his features were exceptionally handsome, even more so than the most handsome male insects Bai Shu had ever seen – precisely the type Bai Shu was fond of.
Bai Shu felt a bit excited, regretting his current powerless and disheveled state, embarrassed to be seen like this in front of such a stunning individual.
If he were still in the insect world, encountering such a handsome specimen, Bai Shu would undoubtedly have immediately sought his affection, persuading him to accept his advances. However, in his present form, Bai Shu believed that someone as outstanding as this person wouldn’t spare him a second glance.
Just as Bai Shu felt utterly embarrassed, the person took out a paper-wrapped bun from his pocket and handed it to Bai Shu’s mouth, saying, “Eat this. Once you’re full, you’ll regain your strength.”
Bai Shu was a bit stunned but took a couple of hearty bites. His heart raced, and he felt as if a halo was about to emerge from the person’s back.
The bun was soft and savory, even though it had cooled off. The meat inside was juicy and delicious, filling Bai Shu’s mouth with the flavors, satisfying his hungry stomach.
The person handed the remaining bun to Bai Shu, stood up, and said, “Let’s go. We need to continue our journey. It’s getting dark, and we still need to tidy up the house later.”
After saying that, he climbed onto the carriage and didn’t spare Bai Shu another glance.
The youth named Xiao Shu dragged Bai Shu to the side of the road and sat down in the front of the carriage.
The carriage driver urged the horses, passing by Bai Shu. Bai Shu devoured the remaining bun, staring blankly as the carriage drove away.
Why is this person so gentle, kind-hearted, and good-looking? If he were a male insect, he would undoubtedly be the most sought after in the insect world.
Bai Shu, who had been single for over twenty years, experienced the taste of love for the first time.
Author’s note:
This setting uses the theme of insect-like creatures.
The female insects are imposing and dominant, while the male insects are scarce due to reproductive issues and being seized by the females.
Please don’t be scared; the insect world in this context is not actual insects but humanoid beings.
As for the world with “哥儿”{GER} it’s a common concept, and there are no personal interpretations.
This story seems nice so far
