Chapter 2: Fruit Puree

Mi Yang, a little baby, had absolutely no human rights at all. He wanted to move his hands and feet, but he was securely bound, and his little strength couldn’t break free at all. He could only lie on his back and “cry and babble” for half a day, trying to express his dissatisfaction.

The two new adults who had just upgraded to ‘parents’ had no idea what he meant at all. Mi Yang’s dad, Mi Zehai, with a young and energetic face, proudly said, “Loud voice, just like me!”

Mi Yang’s mom, named Cheng Qing, who looked around twenty-five years old at the moment, had an outstanding figure and appearance. With an oval face that seemed particularly affable, she smiled with curved eyes and said softly, “The nose looks like you too.”

Mi Zehai looked at his wife and then at his son, happily saying, “Indeed, but the eyes and mouth look like you. People always say that sons take after their mothers. Our son will surely be a handsome young man. No need to worry about finding a wife in the future!”

Cheng Qing pushed him lightly, blushing, and said, “What nonsense are you talking about!”

Mi Zehai replied, “I didn’t talk nonsense. Back in high school, you were the school’s beauty. No one thought I could bring you home. They envied me!” He became proud again, showing no signs of future seriousness. He picked up Mi Yang, rubbed his face with the little bit of stubble, and kissed him, saying, “Son, grow up quickly and join the army like your dad!”

Cheng Qing, protecting the baby from behind, scolded, “Yangyang will attend a military academy in the future, not like you!”

Mi Zehai responded, “Hey, you praised me yesterday!”

Mi Yang, not making any noise, simply closed his eyes and didn’t look at them.

As the dog food was being shoveled into his mouth one after another, he really couldn’t eat anymore.

The little baby’s body easily grew tired, with no sense of time between eating and sleeping. The days passed by quickly.

Mi Yang guessed that he was probably only three or four months old at this moment. He couldn’t turn over, but a few days ago, he managed to lift his head while lying on his stomach, surprising his parents who applauded him. However, they didn’t let him stay in that position for too long. Most of the time, he lay on his back, and because of this, his field of vision was limited. Occasionally, he glimpsed at the calendar and realized it was December.

Mi Yang blinked his eyes. December of 1988. His return this time was quite thorough; he basically had to start over from scratch.

After a few days, the weather became colder. After dark, the military camp became quiet, and one could hear the howling wind, making the windows rattle.

Mi Yang’s mom held him, leaning by the window. There was a hint of worry on her young face. Mi Yang reached out and touched her. Cheng Qing gently kissed his hand and sighed, “Yangyang, are you worried too? Dad took the team out for training and hasn’t returned yet. I’m afraid the mountain might be blocked by heavy snow…”

Mi Yang blinked his eyes. He remembered that his dad had a background in field forces and later transferred to a local position due to health issues. However, he still persisted in staying in the military for more than twenty years. This time, there shouldn’t be any major issues.

But Mi Yang couldn’t speak yet. He could only reach out and pat his mom to express comfort.

Cheng Qing played with her son for a while, feeling much better. Soon, she cheered up and prepared ginger soup and hot water, eagerly waiting for her husband to return.

When Mi Zehai came back, there were snowflakes clinging to his body. He stomped his feet at the door a few times before entering the room. Indeed, his ears and face were bright red from the cold, but his eyes were shining. When he saw his wife and child, he grinned, revealing a set of white teeth, “Qinger, Yangyang, I’m back!”

Cheng Qing hurriedly got up and said, “Wait a moment, I’ll pour you a bowl of hot soup!”

Mi Zehai smiled and said, “Pour a few more bowls. We have friends coming over.”

Mi Yang curiously looked up, but he was too small. He strained to lift his head but could only see a corner. Outside the room, there were quite a few footsteps, and someone saluted, cheerfully saying, “Hello, sister-in-law!”

Following that person, someone else envied, “The deputy company commander was right. It’s great to have a caring wife. Coming back in the evening, there’s even hot soup waiting!”

The voices outside were quite loud. It seemed rare for military family members to visit the camp, especially in deep mountainous areas. When people saw each other, they couldn’t help but exchange a few words. The person continued, “Sister-in-law, you don’t know. We could have come back earlier. When we were coming down the mountain, the snow covered the road. The newly arrived political commissar, not familiar with the route, drove right into a snowdrift. Luckily, we happened to come across them and dug them out, both the people and the car! There was also the political commissar’s wife and child in the car, about the same age as our Yangyang. Their little faces turned blue from the cold, looking quite pitiful!”

Cheng Qing was startled and quickly asked, “Are they okay now?”

The soldier grinned and said, “They’re fine. The car broke down halfway, but the deputy company commander sent someone to pick them up. Oh, by the way, the political commissar said he’ll personally come to thank the deputy company commander later!”

Cheng Qing felt a bit awkward. Although Mi Zehai was currently a deputy company commander, life in the military was financially tight. Their small home had only two enamel cups, not enough to entertain guests. She whispered something to Mi Zehai, but he seemed accustomed to the easy-going style of field forces. He waved his hand and said, “It’s okay. Commissar Bai has more years of service than me. Just find any bowl. He won’t mind these things!”

Mi Yang, lying in the compartment, was trying hard to turn over. Upon hearing this, he furrowed his brow. Commissar Bai? Why did that name sound familiar?

As Mi Yang struggled to turn over, Commissar Bai arrived, not alone, but accompanied by his wife and child. The child, who was said to have suffered from the cold, was wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket. A thick matching hat covered most of the chubby face.

Cheng Qing poured two bowls of hot ginger soup for them, saying, “Commissar, why did you bring your spouse and child here? It’s too cold for them!”

Mrs. Bai, who looked a few years older than Cheng Qing, held Cheng Qing’s hand and smiled, “It’s not a problem. You must be Cheng Qing, the one Lieutenant Mi mentioned several times on the way. Let’s go inside and talk. Let these big, rough guys chat among themselves.”

Saying this, they walked into the compartment together. Cheng Qing breathed a sigh of relief after they entered. She wasn’t very good at handling such situations, but chatting with Mrs. Bai here felt more comfortable.

When Mi Yang lifted his head to see, he was a bit stunned by the young woman who walked in with his mom. When he heard her self-introduction with a playful smile, his heart skipped a beat.

“Don’t call me Mrs. or anything like that. I’m a few years older than you. Just call me Luo Jiangjing,” the woman said, taking off her hat to reveal slightly curled hair, looking very young and stylish. She placed her child on the bed, removed his little hat, revealing a serious and beautiful little face with closed eyes and puckered lips. She laughed, “This is my son, Bai Luochuan. Just like his dad, he always has a serious face. Nowhere near as charming as your little one!”

Mi Yang dryly stared at her, blinked his eyes. It couldn’t be what he was thinking, right? But the name Mrs. Bai mentioned, along with the stunning face before him, easily overlapped with an adult Bai Luochuan. The young master indeed possessed good looks; even his angry expression was captivating, like flames dancing in his pupils.

Mrs. Bai came over and gently touched Mi Yang’s little face. She even used a handkerchief to wipe the drool from the corner of his mouth, smiling warmly, “So adorable!”

Mi Yang: “Uh?”

Mrs. Bai was surprised, “He’s speaking so soon?”

Cheng Qing laughed, “No, it’s just that I have nothing to do here. I found a book of Tang poems and recited it to him every day. Maybe he’s picked up some baby talk from me.”

Mrs. Bai said, “That’s good. Early education is important.”

The room was warm, and the two women quickly became familiar, despite Mrs. Bai being an elegant lady from a well-off family. She was down-to-earth, responding to everything Cheng Qing said. Perhaps with a sense of gratitude, she felt particularly close to Cheng Qing and her baby. After a while, there was a knock on the compartment’s wooden door. A steady male voice said, “Jiang Jing?”

Mrs. Bai got up to open the door, and Cheng Qing lifted Mi Yang just in time to see Commissar Bai entering. Seeing the serious and handsome face that already had faint lines resembling the character “川” (chuan) between the eyebrows, Mi Yang knew that this was indeed Bai Luochuan. Commissar Bai—Bai Jingrong, looked almost the same as he did twenty-some years later. He still stood straight with a stern face. After entering, he said to them, “The car has been brought back. I brought some things with me.”

Mrs. Bai happily said, “That’s great. Please bring them over directly.”

In no time, a security officer brought over a square plastic foam box. Opening it revealed a small box of fresh fruits, including plenty of bananas and oranges, as well as several large and ripe tomatoes.

Mi Yang hadn’t eaten anything besides formula for several months, and suddenly smelling the fresh fruit fragrance in winter, he couldn’t help but move his little nose.

Beside him, Bai Luochuan, who was sleeping with a serious face and closed eyes, also moved his hands and feet. Though he didn’t wake up, he turned his head to search for something to eat.

Mrs. Bai said, “This is supplementary food for the child. It’s not easy to bring a lot in winter. I’ll share some of Luochuan’s with your baby. I asked Lieutenant Mi when I came, and he said a three-month-old can have a bit of fruit puree.”

Cheng Qing quickly waved her hands, blushing, “No, no. How can I accept this? It’s too much…”

At this time, greenhouses were not yet widespread, and in the winter, northern vegetables mostly consisted of cabbage, radishes, and potatoes. Occasionally, having some leafy greens was considered fresh. Fruits from the south were even rarer, especially in such a box. Cheng Qing felt it was inappropriate to accept.

However, Mrs. Bai insisted and took a small spoon, cut open a banana, and taught Cheng Qing how to feed the baby. Mrs. Bai was attentive and gentle, and Cheng Qing had just become a mother with no elder by her side. She didn’t know many things about taking care of a child, and Mrs. Bai’s hands-on guidance in feeding the baby fruit puree made her feel a sense of gratitude.

Mi Yang took a bite of the banana puree, smacking his lips, enjoying the sweetness.

On the other side, the little boss, although only half a year old, was already adept at turning over. He crawled out from the cashmere blanket, babbling, and reached out to grab the spoon, acting possessive.

Mrs. Bai poked his nose and said, “Little glutton, what’s wrong with letting your little brother have a bite? Wait a bit, I’ll give you some when we get home.”

Little Bai Luochuan was dissatisfied; he still wanted to eat. When he saw the spoon approaching Mi Yang’s mouth, he eagerly followed along, fixating on the spoon and almost biting Mi Yang’s mouth.

Mi Yang tilted his head backward, his little face turning red, refusing to eat—what could he eat when Bai Luochuan’s drool was dripping on his face?!
